Diabetes and I

Class 6 Grade 6, Lung-hsing Elementary School, Taoyuan County

CHANG, CHI

I
n most people’s stereotyped impression, diabetes is a disease for old people. I am only 12, but “it” is already closely attached to my life.

I could remember that it was the fourth day of the Chinese New Year that year, and everybody was in great delight to celebrate the Chinese New Year. I discovered suddenly that I had type 1 diabetes due to a serious cold. Since then I had to measure blood sugar and inject insulin every day, and also had to control my diet and have an appropriate amount of exercise.

My mother called me to wake up as usual on that day, but I did not get up. She impatiently walked to my room and cried out loud: “I will take the big slice of “saute” if you do not get up!”, but I did not make any response.

My mother touched my forehead and it was really hot. She took my body temperature and it was 40℃. My mother was frightened, and accompanied with my father to drive me to the hospital. The doctor said: “It doesn’t matter! It is just a common cold.” My parents felt relaxed. However, my temperature was really high in the morning the second day. My mother gave me an antipyretic and slept on an icy pillow, but I got a high temperature after half an hour. My temperature came up and down for several days, and my parents had to send me to a district hospital for emergency treatment. After examination, they discovered that my blood sugar was as high as 243. There was a Ketone reaction in my urine, and my body temperature also reached 40℃. In order to avoid ketonic and acid intoxication causing a coma, the doctor suggested we immediately transfer to Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for further examination. The emergency room was overcrowded with patients, and there was ceaseless howling and crying sounds. My blood sugar and body temperature was like an elevator going up and down. We spent the whole night there, and I was finally hospitalized on the next day. After a series of examinations and treatment, my condition was ultimately controlled. Before I left the hospital, the health consultant guided us on the method to select food, how to measure blood sugar, make an injection, and the first aid method to use if I had extremely low blood sugar.

In order to cope with classmates’ doubts after going back to school, my mother and I also practiced possible circumstances over and over again. The eve before leaving the hospital, I could not sleep. I had fearful and painful feelings, and I sobbed on the bed ceaselessly.

On the first day back at school, my mother accompanied me to the classroom. When I was hesitating what I should do, one of my classmates walked out and said hello to me. Suddenly I felt so nice and warm, and gradually became accustomed to school life.

During these years, diabetes has made me realize that we must cherish our good fortune. My mother often told me that as long as diabetes patients eat high-fiber, low-oil, low-grease, and low-calorie food, they can maintain their health. I would like to thank my mother to bring my lunch, check my blood sugar and make injections for me. I would also like to thank my teacher, classmates and my family to accompany me to walk away from this shadow.
