I was very close to my grandfather since I was very young. However, he has become much thinner recently, and he often looks tired, and goes to the toilet more frequently. There was one time I saw many ants gathering on the wet ground in the bathroom. I felt strange because there was no food or candy, where did those ants come for? I was curious and asked my mother. My mother told me that my grandfather had diabetes.
I asked the nurse in the health care room of my school, and the nurse told me that the reason for diabetes is an unusual increase of the glucose in blood, which cannot be used completely and sugar is excreted with urine.
The nurse said that diabetes would have “three excesses and one less”, which are the symptoms of eating a lot, drinking a lot, urinating a lot and less body weight. I suddenly realized that because grandpa’s urine contained sugar, there were so many ants after he went to the bathroom. I also understood the reasons why grandpa felt hungry easily, had a good appetite, and often felt thirsty and urinated frequently. If diabetes is not well controlled, other complications will happen. In particular, we must prevent our feet from having wounds because they will then become inflamed and festered. We must treasure our feet ordinarily and do not injure them.
I was really worried after I heard all of this, and I was scared that my grandfather’s condition was serious. The nurse told me not to worry. If only we can avoid sweet food, animal fat fried food, and maintain a light diet; improve blood circulation, lower blood sugar, control body weight and also receive medical treatment, then diabetes could be effectively controlled. After I heard the words from the nurse, I decided immediately that I would like to become my grandpa’s little doctor and fight diabetes with him.
In the evening everyday, I will accompany my grandpa to take a walk in the park nearby. I always ask grandpa if he brought his medicine with him. I also put chocolate or candy in my pocket for grandpa if his blood sugar has suddenly lowered. I pay attention to grandpa’s feet, whether he wears socks and shoes properly to avoid inflamed feet while walking. I always remind grandpa to have appropriate food and take medicine everyday. Grandpa liked to eat sweet food such as red bean and mung bean pastries before. Although after he got diabetes, he ate less sweet food, sometimes he eats a lot, I would persuade him not to eat. My grandpa will always accept my advice. My grandpa is healthy now, and plays with me as before. His health check was normal several days ago. This is our common pride that my grandpa and I have conquered the fear of diabetes, and makes my grandpa and I have an even closer relationship.
