EL-1Newly Discovered Aspect of Incretins

Yutaka Seino, Kansaidenryoku Hospital and Kyoto University.

Incretins such as GIP and GLP-1 plays an important role not only in insulinotropic action but also in fuel metabolism. GLP-1 is well known to reduce appltive. Using GIP receptor knockout (RKO) mice, we have found that GIP increases nutrient intake and triglyceride accumulation suggesting that GIP is a key molecule linking a high fat diet to obesity by lowering energy expenditure. It has been demonstrated also that glucose-stimulated insulin secretion is maintained despite complete absence of both incretin receptors (double RKO mice), perhaps due to compensatory upregulation of the remaining incretin.
